For the 1987 summer timetable, new quality standards regarding rolling stock, speed, and service were established for the cross-border InterCity trains. Trains that met these criteria were designated "EuroCity." The EC 24 "Erasmus" connected the Tyrolean capital of Innsbruck via Munich and Frankfurt am Main, then along the Rhine via Emmerich with the Dutch capital of Amsterdam. The cars in this set belong to the core part of the train and were used on the entire route.
