A total of only 10 locomotives of the approximately 133-ton tank locomotive were built for use on the so-called Höllentalbahn. The Class 85 locomotives were thus the heaviest tank locomotives used in Germany.
Due to their tractive power, the beefy-looking tank locomotives quickly proved their worth on the mountain route. Due to their good performance, the rack, which had previously been required for operation, was removed as early as 1933. The locomotives were also extremely popular with the locomotive crew, as they reduced travel times for passenger trains by a good third of the original travel time.
