The original Class 110 was developed for passenger and freight train service, and as a variant for shunting service for the DR. The top speed was 100 km/h with an output of 1,000 hp. Between 1983 and 1991, new engines with a rated power of 1,500 hp were installed in some machines and reclassified as BR 114.
