The E 41/141 series locomotives were first delivered in 1956 for light mixed service on main and branch lines. They were the only series in the standard locomotive program to receive a switchgear on the low-voltage side of the transformer. The switchgear had a characteristic noise, which, along with the large jumps in tractive force, led to the nickname "Firecracker".
