For operation on less frequently used routes, Deutsche Bahn acquired a new local railcar in 1999 to replace older designs. The choice fell on the RegioShuttle 1, developed by ADtranz and designated BR 650 by DB AG. This vehicle type has become established primarily in southern Germany.
The RS 1 is characterized above all by its innovative, trapezoidal window strips. Two diesel engines, each with almost 250 hp, propel the low-floor train to a top speed of 120 km/h. With a dead weight of 40 tons, the railcar, which offers seating for up to 101 passengers, is quite lightweight.
