The Dutch oven is the classic cooking appliance for cooking over an open fire. A Dutch oven, also called a DO, is a large, cast-iron pot with three legs that can be placed on charcoal or hung over the fire. The pot has been in use since the seventh century and has proven to be an indispensable attribute for outdoor cooking. It supposedly got its name from Dutch merchants who sold the pots door to door. Dutch settlers in America also regularly used the DO. The pot quickly became popular because it allowed for preparing delicious meals with primitive means.

The Americans quickly figured it out. You can prepare all kinds of dishes in a Dutch oven: from pizzas to stews and from roasts to cakes. In principle, you can start cooking in a Dutch oven right away: all you need is the pot itself and a fire.
